Fireplace Mantels
Mantels come in a wide selection of
sizes and styles, and should be chosen to complement both the other
parts of the fireplace and your home.
A fireplace mantel is a shelf that sits on
pilasters overhanging the fire. They are most often used to display
special treasures like family photos or sentimental vases, and are
sometimes called either chimneypieces or mantelpieces. Whenever there is
no burning fire the mantel usually becomes the centerpiece of the room.
Mantels come in a wide selection of sizes and styles, and should be
chosen to complement both the other parts of the fireplace and your
home. You will get a classic feeling from a traditional mantel, which
has a pedestal design and a larger shelf. You will achieve a greater
pedestal effect the more the shelf overhangs on the sides and front.
Current designs are not quite as elaborate when it comes to pedestals.
They highlight different elements of the fireplace design. Your
attention is more likely to be drawn to the craftsmanship if you choose
a simpler design, such as a mission style mantel. Other types of mantels
will choose to emphasis the beautiful wood they were crafted from or
other design elements.
You can even find mantels that don’t at first to be a mantel. These
mantels are more modular, with a more unified look than you will find in
traditional mantels. These sophisticated mantels are a perfect match for
the more contemporary home.
